The recordings on this release were made in early 2011 using handmade analog electronic hardware. Using a homebrew interface, the analog sound-generation hardware was coupled to custom laptop software which derived its parameters via real-time analysis of the analog sound signals. These improvisations are the result of the composer/performer/maker interacting with a set of electronic systems, which themselves are largely out of his control.

Not intended for listening on headphones.

Lazers! Release on Stasisfield

The Lazers! release, clocking in at around 100 minutes of music, is now available for free at Stasisfield.

Stasisfield curator John Kannenberg eloquently describes the recording:

Lazers! is a Milwaukee-based trio of composer/performers including David Collins, Steve Schlei, and Greg Surges. Their collective work focuses on custom-built instruments and indeterminate notation, incorporating situational, playful approaches to performance while generating exploratory sonic spaces. Electronic instrumentation comingles with structures and forms rooted in the acoustic realm of improvisation: look for beats elsewhere, this material is more about sound’s relationship to negative space than pattern and rhythm. A multitude of approaches and scenarios makes each track on their debut album a fresh experience, its own uniquely impermanent world.

Just added a page for “Morphologies,” a SuperCollider instrument I made last year. The piece is structured around large neighborhoods of cellular automata, which transform musical motives as they interact.

The upcoming Lazers! (David Collins, Steve Schlei, Greg Surges) release has been recorded, mastered, and sent off to Petcord. 9 tracks, around 100 minutes of music – free to download and share!

Improvisations (more and less structured) and composed pieces by David Collins and myself.

My pieces “Fission” and “RadioGamelan” are included here. I wrote these pieces specifically for this group, so the performances are quite good – if I do say so myself.

Should be out around mid – late April.
