Cytoarchitecture
2/8 Channel Software Instrument, April 2008 Realized in PD
Program Note:
cytoarchitecture – the specific arrangement of cells in tissue, often used to refer to the arrangement of nerve cells in the cerebral cortex.
The music is created by six computer improvisors, each monitoring and responding to musical output from the other five. Each module has a deliberately flawed memory, and incoming musical data is transformed and distorted according to the distinct character of that module. The modules all produce sound in personal ways, borrowing one synthesis algorithm from each decade between 1950 and 2008. The human listens and makes suggestions regarding the large-scale evolution of the piece, as well as the moment-to-moment ensemble relationships.
