In Pattern Recognition, an intricate system of cues allows a limited amount of repeating phrases to be varied and modified by the context in which they appear. The order of phrases in one voice is determined contextually by the materials currently present in the other voice, and vice-versa. The material fluctuates between specific, algorithmically determined gestures and semi-indeterminate phrases in which performer interaction is emphasized. A highly detailed and specific method of listening is required, and any moment has the potential to change the direction of the piece.
