RadioGamelan (2010)

Screen shot 2010-04-30 at 12.00.46 PM

Software for networked computers, 2010.

Recording released on Stasisfield.

For David Collins, Steve Schlei, and Greg Surges.

RadioGamelan is the first in a series of pieces which seek to embellish the 1960′s notion of “action scores” (embodied in the music of Christian Wolff and John Cage, in pieces which specify the “how” of performance, rather than the “what”) with computer programs that enable specific types of performance. RadioGamelan allows each performer to choose their own tempo, and freely combine that tempo with those of the other performers – creating shifting polyrhythmic patterns. The specific rhythmic process allows pitches, amplitudes, and timbres to be chosen freely, while the piece retains a unique character.
