Waveformations is an experiment in composition with field recordings. Composed for the Melt : Minnesota Remixed compilation on Wandering Ear, all of the sound sources are field recordings taken from locations in Minnesota. Using spectral transformation and time-stretching, the samples are mangled and warped almost beyond recognition. A bird call becomes an entire section, and the timbre of single sounds evolves in slow-motion. The nature of the sonic materials allows for smooth transitions between sections, while maintaining clear sectionality and timbral unity. The form is an evolved one, letting the materials dictate their own lengths, rather than imposing an artificial structure onto them.
